Your glass fixtures should be cleaned regularly so that you can let as much light into your room as possible. Also, you don’t want your glass fixture to look dirty and foggy. Here are nine green cleaning tips and tricks to make them look crystal clear.
1. Don’t Forget to Look Up
Hanging light fixtures should be dusted as often as furniture in the room. You can use a retractable microfiber duster or a simple feather duster. You should wipe down the glass once a month with a damp fine-woven microfiber cloth to wipe down the inside and outside of the glass fixture.
2. Fixed Chain
When cleaning hanging fixtures, don’t forget to clean the chains that hold them in place. These substances can build up, especially in the kitchen, when grease mixes with dust. You can put a few drops of degreasing dish soap on a damp microfiber cloth to remove greasy build-up.
3. Shade Is Okay
If you have a fabric lampshade on your fixture, there are some easy ways to prevent dust from accumulating. First, wipe the fabric with a clean, dry microfiber cloth, which will remove most of the dust. You can also use a viscous roller to trap dust without spreading it to the surface underneath. If there is a significant buildup on the lampshade, remove it from the fixture and use the dust brush attachment on the vacuum cleaner to remove any buildup.
4. Hidden in the Range Hood
One luminaire that is always overlooked is the one that is located in the range hood. The fixture usually has a plastic cover to keep out the spilled grease. The lid needs to be cleaned as often as a stove, otherwise the lid will be covered in grease and will not allow light to pass through completely. Use a simple degreasing cleaner.
5. Don’t Stand Still in the Bathroom
Lamps in the bathroom can be very difficult to clean if they are not cleaned regularly. The dust mixes with the steam produced during the shower and forms a thick paste on the lamp, which is difficult to remove after drying. Try to get into the habit of cleaning fixtures the same way you clean your vanity mirror. If you use it as part of your system cleaning, you’ll never have to worry about thick dirt on the top of your bathroom light again.
6. Rinse Cycle
A quick tip to clean wall light glass is to put them in the dishwasher. (Avoid doing this on any item with a special finish.) Place them on the top rack and let the dishwasher run for a full cycle. Try not to put them together with greasy pots and pans. Your dishwasher will remove dust and film that has accumulated on the glass. If there are spots on it, they can be repaired with a finely spun microfiber cloth.
7. Recessed Lighting
Recessed lighting should be cleaned by removing the bulb and removing dust from the recessed area. Turn off the light and allow the bulb to cool completely. Remove the lamp and use a dry microfiber cloth to remove dust from inside the fixture. Make sure to wipe the area carefully so that the container does not come loose. Recessed lamps are often fixed to the ceiling with spring-like hangers and are difficult to reconnect.
8. Keep Tracks
Track lighting should be dusted at least once every two weeks to prevent dust and dirt from accumulating on the top of the fixture. This dust can be dusted off with a retractable feather duster. Make sure to remove dust from inside and around the bulb. Spider webs tend to form on the inside of the head around the bulb.
9. Take Outside
Outdoor luminaires need to be cleaned regularly. We sometimes ignore them when we do cleaning because they are out of our line of sight. Use a broom or blower to remove insects and cobwebs around the fixture. Glass lamps can be washed in the dishwasher to remove dirt.
