There’s nothing like rattan to add fun, texture, and coastal charm to a space. It has a unique natural look that is both classic and full of natural charm. But can rattan be used all year round?
This is a question that many people ask when the autumn colors begin to color the trees and our fireplaces pray for the first flames of the season. “Rattan reminds people of summer homes, island living and leisure living,” says Amanda Lindroth, interior designer and founder of the Amanda Lindroth Collection. But that doesn’t mean they have to be limited to warmer weather months.
From mixing fabrics and price points, to layering for warmth, to updating your beloved pieces with paint, there are plenty of ways to give your rattan pieces a second life this fall.
1. Mix High and Low
The key to transitioning rattan from summer to autumn is blending. Whether you’re taking a high-to-low approach by investing in designer pieces or choosing to buy thrift with your own history on eBay, creating the look of a collection adds character and charm. The concept draws on an age-old aesthetic to design a unique display shelf that showcases beloved pieces that have come together over time. In addition, the texture of rattan coupled with the fact that it is a natural material gives it an earthy appeal. Look for pieces that draw on this natural aesthetic, whether high-end, vintage, or consignment, to create a truly timeless look.
2. Mix and Match Fabrics Carefully
When it comes to rattan, don’t be afraid of massiveness. Even a large sofa can be used year-round, but there are some factors to keep in mind. “It’s always wise to balance rattan with good upholstery and soft goods, unless you’re on a covered patio – in which case use full rattan,” says Lindros. For interior spaces, a mix of textiles can provide warm tones and an elegant feel, transforming coastal summer materials into a full autumn pattern. Consider using throw pillows, cushions, and blankets to warm your rattan. The comfort factor is key.
3. Look for Ways to Add Warmth
Rattan accessories will definitely be more summer-leaning, if you will. To show the seasonality of cool weather, think about how you can bring a little warmth to the rattan. One of the ways Lindros likes to achieve this is by using smaller decorations such as rattan lampshades. On chandeliers or table lamps, they can emit a warm, textured glow that gives a sense of home in the fall. The amber aura can also create a pleasant fireplace-like atmosphere on dim nights.
4. Don’t Be Afraid of Paint
Natural colors and white rattan are the styles that stand out, but they often give a distinctly summery feel. To add year-round appeal and even refresh pieces that need a little love, Lindros recommends reapplying a new coat of paint. Especially for outdoor furniture, regular paint jobs can make items look fresh and seasonal, no matter what time of year it is. “I love painted rattan as an easy way to give vintage items a new look or a temporary change of look, so grab some outdoor paint and give old rattan items a new look,” she advises. “Find a deep chocolate brown or crimson full-gloss paint and put on a mat and your space will change.”
5. Embrace Its Coastal Influence
There is no need to counter the impact of rattan on the coast. After all, there’s nothing better than going on a beach vacation after all the crowds have dispersed during the season. Lindroth embraced the moment by adding some rattan accents to the entrance to the residence, allowing guests to experience the aesthetics to come. “We like to place rattan brackets on the side of the entrance mirrors, or hang high on the porch wall decorated with orchids to bring a little island style of living during the cooler months,” she explains. To warm it up, consider autumn flowers, clay pots, or other natural elements with a warm aesthetic.
